A new £45million hotel is to be built close to the main terminal at Stansted Airport, bringing the number of hotels on the airport site to five and creating around 60 new jobs.

London-based developer Urban&Civic has signed a franchise agreement with Hilton Worldwide to bring the mid-price Hampton by Hilton brand to the airport, with construction work due to start by the end of the year.

Urban&Civic secured planning permission for a hotel following a deal to acquire the two-acre site, alongside the Enterprise House office complex, from the property division of Stansted’s owner, Manchester Airports Group (MAG).

The 357 bedroom hotel, due to open in the summer of 2017, will offer direct under-cover access to the airport terminal and will join the Hilton, Radisson Blu, Holiday Inn and Premier Inn hotels already operating at Stansted, bringing the total number of bedrooms on the site to more than 1,600.

There are currently 16 Hampton by Hilton hotels in the UK, with Stansted being one of 17 more under development.

Patrick Fitzgibbon, senior vice president, development, at Hilton Worldwide, said, “The introduction of Hampton by Hilton to London Stansted Airport is consistent with our strategy of developing focused service properties sufficiently close to the airport that guests can access the terminal without a shuttle bus.

“This strategy has proven successful for our hotels in a number of locations, including properties at airports in Gatwick, Exeter and Liverpool, and is integral to our developments in Bristol airport and here in Stansted.

“With more scheduled European destinations than any other UK airport, Stansted is an ideal location at which to develop our economy brand.”

Robin Butler, managing director of Urban&Civic, added: “We are delighted to have signed the franchise agreement with Hampton by Hilton and look forward to providing a warm welcome to travellers using Stansted Airport. This is a key site for us as we continue to invest in the growth potential of the London-Stansted-Cambridge corridor. Good design in the right location is a touchstone for Urban&Civic and this hotel will be no exception.”

The hotel forms part of MAG’s £260m investment plan to attract more passengers and airlines to Stansted, including long-haul services.

Lynda Shillaw, chief executive of MAG Property, said, “We are pleased to confirm the completion of the deal with Urban&Civic to create a 357-bed Hampton by Hilton hotel at London Stansted Airport, supporting the increased passenger growth at the UK’s fastest growing airport.

“At MAG Property, we know airport property and we know how to help our occupiers and partners to get the most out of our unique airport locations. Our deal with Urban&Civic is another great example in action.”
