THE new University Campus Suffolk building on the Ipswich Waterfront has picked up the award for Best Education Building at this year's East Anglia Local Authority Building Control Building Excellence Awards.
Waterfront House beat off competition from three others shortlisted projects, including Leonardo House at West Suffolk College and university buildings in Cambridge and Norwich.
The award was presented to Peter Williams of international architects RMJM, which designed the building, and Sam Barker of Willmott Dixon, main contractor of the project, by the former Anglia TV and now BBC London weather presenter Wendy Hurrell during a ceremony attended by more than 200 people at the University Arms Hotel in Cambridge.
The building design achieves a high sustainability rating with the use of a green roof, unusually set at a steep pitch of 20 degrees. The excellence of the design and high compliance with regulations was achieved using a working partnership with Ipswich Borough Council's building control team. The scheme will now go forward to the national event to be held in London later in the year.
Waterfront House is also in the running for regional awards from the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors and the Royal Institute of British Architects.
