A STOWMARKET-BASED building firm is celebrating the completion of a £7.5million college building complex in Cambridge.

Haymills built the five storey accommodation block and four-storey study facilities block at St Edmunds College over 70 weeks within an extremely confined site in the city's Mount Pleasant area.

The new buildings, designed by Bland, Brown & Cole Architects, include 71 student bedrooms, a library, meeting spaces, teaching rooms and associated facilities.

To add to the challenges builders faced, the new buildings were on a sloping site and included full and semi-basements.

Architect Barry Brown said it had been a “very successful” contract, with high standards of workmanship.

“Needless to day, our client is delighted with the result,” he said.

Work on an additional accommodation block has already begun using the same team, and is due to be completed in May 2007.
