WORK is set to get under way next month on renovating a “run-down” part of the Ipswich Waterfront.

A road will be installed between Patteson Road and Neptune Quay and the gate at the latter – seen by some marking the end of Ipswich Waterfront proper – will be removed.

It is part of a project financed from a pot of money that developers pay into when they are granted planning permission.

The area between the road and the water will also be improved. Ipswich Borough Council (IBC) officers met with around 40 Waterfront residents last week to discuss landscaping options. The authority will consult with businesses on the Waterfront before deciding how to proceed.

Jay Harvey, co-ordinator of Ipswich Waterfront Action, said: “The area is in quite a run-down state and any way to improve that part of the Waterfront would be brilliant.

“It will encourage people to go round the area more – people see that gate and think that’s the end of the Waterfront. There are business units there so once the area is improved hopefully more businesses will set up there.”

Liz Harsant, who represents the Holywells ward on IBC, said: “I think it’s going to change the whole aspect.

“The residents have already said they are the last concern and that everywhere else looks smart and their area looks grim.

“I think it’s fantastic and I’m really proud I was part of it.”

Mr Harvey added although work on the road is expected to get under way mid-February it is unclear at this stage whether it will be open to motorised traffic.

Suffolk County Council is currently consulting on whether to fully pedestrianise the entire length of the Waterfront.
