IAN Smith has been appointed managing director at Bury St Edmunds-based signs manufacturer Haldo, with former managing director Rick Wildridge, whose father founded the business in 1968, becoming company chairman.

Mr Smith, who was previously operations director, was born in Bury in 1965 and, after leaving the County Upper School in 1980, worked in retail for 13 years before joining Bosta UK.

He left there in 1999 to join Haldo, starting out as a storeman/buyer and progressing to the role of production manager before becoming a director in 2007.

Mr Smith is married, with three sons, and describes himself as “a Leeds United supporter till I die”.

Mr Wildridge, who has been managing director at Haldo since 1997, said he was delighted to be able to appoint a loyal member of staff with nearly 10 years' experience with the company to the role, rather than appointing someone from outside the business who would be unfamiliar with its history, background and culture.
