A celebration of the music of Dame Vera Lynn as the wartime singer reaches her 100th birthday on March 20 takes place at Braintree Museum tomorrow, Tuesday, March 14.

When war broke out, the young singer thought: “There goes my singing career” but she became The Forces’ Sweetheart, entertaining troops on the front line.

During the war, she toured Egypt, India, and Burma giving outdoor concerts.

The songs most associated with her are We’ll Meet Again, The White Cliffs of Dover, A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square and There’ll Always Be an England.

After war she continued recording and broadcasting on radio and also did a lot of work for charity.

Artists Rita B and Ray Dee will sing Vera’s celebrated songs at the museum at a lunchtimne concert at 1.30pm.

Tickets will be £10 and include light refreshments. Booking is essential, call 01376 328868.

Community Transport will be available on 01376 557883.
