Members of the Bury St Edmunds Royal Artillery Association (RAA) held a rededication ceremony for a new memorial tree on Angel Hill in the town.
The new hornbeam tree commemorates “those gunners from west Suffolk who gave their lives in the service of their country”.
The original tree and plaque was donated by Brigadier Denis Blomfield Smith, who was branch presidents at the time.
That tree died due to ground contamination, and a new tree was obtained and planted in November with help from the town’s horticultural organisation – Bury in Bloom – and the town and borough council.
At the ceremony on Friday, May 11, Captain Jos Bird, branch chairman, welcomed members and guests before Canon Cedric Catton performed the rededication.
Following the ceremony, members and guests retired to The Fox Inn, in Eastgate Street, to further celebrate the rededication.
The Bury St Edmunds branch of the RAA meets regularly on the first Friday of every month at 11am at the Fox Inn.
The branch currently has 25 active members and new members would be made most welcome.
