The Colne Valley Cycle Ride, which started from the cricket field at East Colne airfield on Sunday, April 29, attracted nearly 400 riders – including club cyclists, families, and one father and son team on a tandem.

Riders had a choice of three, 20, 50 and 80-mile routes, with those tackling the longest distances treated with scenic views of Wakes Colne, Steeple Bumpstead, Wethersfield and Castle Hedingham.

There was also a large turnout from the family of an airlifted patient, one of whom raised over £1,000 in sponsorship.

Fay Boissieux, event manager at Essex & Herts Air Ambulance, said “It was great to see so many cyclists turn out for this event despite the grey skies. The day has raised over £12,500, with more sponsorship still to come, which will help keep our life-saving work service operational, so we’d like to thank everyone who took part.

“The 80 mile route, new for this year, was particularly popular with those who wanted to cycle on roads used by the Tour de France on its last visit to the UK.

“Thanks too to all our volunteers who helped to marshal the event. Many spent hours standing at road junctions to make sure that everyone got back safely.”
