After more than 900 miles, 18 bus journeys and a few ticket mishaps, a Great Cornard charity worker made it from John O’Groats to Land’s End.

Patrick Munford, who has Asperger’s Sydrome, raised more than £800 for a Sudbury transport charity by taking on the solo trip, and is now looking for more donations to reach his £1,000 target.

The 21-year-old works for GoStart, which runs community bus services, and hopes his fundraising can go some way to paying it back for the trust and support it has given him.

He said: “I started as a volunteer then they gave me a job about a year ago. I struggled to get employment due to my Asperger’s, but they gave me a reason to get up every day.

“They worked really hard to give me a paying job. I carry out maintenance and cleaning on the fleet of buses.”

Talking about the journey, which took six days, he said: “It was scary at times, I was completely by myself and had to sleep on three buses.

“I spent a month, every night, planning my journey on the computer. I was booking the tickets and starting from where I got to the previous day.

“I think I would do it again but the other way round, the sign at Land’s End was closed so I never got to see it. There was extremely bad fog when I arrived. I don’t think I would do it alone though.”

The bus enthusiast, who owns a coach, revealed a technical issue meant he faced penalty charges for his journey from Glasgow to Manchester, after discovering he had paid for a ticket for the wrong day.

He finished his journey at the end of last year.

Nick Reed, trustee at GoStart, said: “We are immensely proud of what Patrick has achieved. He organised the whole trip himself and was able to get support from a number of hotel and bus companies, which means all of the money he has raised will go towards the charity.”
