POLICE have cordoned off parts of a street and a church in Bury St Edmunds today after receiving reports about a “distressed” woman.

Details are sketchy, but scenes of crime officers are currently investigating the reports and parts of St Johns Street and St Johns Church were sealed off.

Police this afternoon issued an appeal for information after the family of the woman contacted officers yesterday morning.

A spokesman for Suffolk police said: “The female had been out in Bury town centre overnight on Saturday and Sunday and police are carrying out inquiries to establish her movements.

“We want to hear from anyone who may have seen a lone female in her 20s in the town centre on Saturday night or early Sunday morning, especially three people seen walking down St John's Street as she did.”

Anyone with information should contact Assistant Detective Sergeant Craig Brett at Bury CID on 01284 774100 or Crimestoppers on 0800 111 555/
