A man had to be led to safety by firefighters after a fire broke out in his flat.

Three fire crews were called to the property in Agate Road, Clacton at around 4.30am this morning.

With the man trapped in the flat, a fire control room operator kept the man on the phone until firefighters arrived and led him to safety.

Two crews from Clacton and one from Weeley took around half an hour to extinguish the blaze.

An Essex County Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said the cause of the fire was unknown and an investigation had been launched.
