A COMMUNITY woodland project was launched by primary school children yesterday.

Wickham Woods, at Wickham Market, is a project to create and maintain a native woodland wild space for the village.

Organisers of the project are looking for a suitable site but children planted some native trees which will eventually form part of the wood.

Spokesman for the project, Judi Newman, said: “The event (yesterday) was all about letting people know what we are planning to create and hopefully encouraging the community to get involved.

“We are still searching for a piece of land, obviously we don't expect landowners to give us a piece of land, although that would be great, but we need to let people know we are looking.

“We already have the help of the schoolchildren and hopefully in the autumn they will be collecting native tree seeds to plant out in the nursery beds so that when we find a piece of land we will have saplings to plant.”

The project is supported by the Green Light Trust's Community-owned Wildspaces scheme.
