COMMUTERS may be hit with delays on the East Anglian mainline this evening following a day of problems.

Delays on trains travelling in both directions between London Liverpool Street and Norwich can be expected until 5.30pm. It follows emergency engineering work carried out since 11am this morning between Ipswich and Needham Market.

The work to fix line-side equipment resulted in a reduced service this afternoon and delays of up to 90 minutes. But a spokesperson for train operator National Express East Anglia said the work finished shortly after 3.30pm.

“There may still be delays as we work to resume a normal service,” the spokesperson said. “We are sorry for these delays and working closely with Network Rail to resume a normal service and quickly as possible.”

Cross Country routes - including between Ipswich and Cambridge - are also affected.
