A SPECIALIST panel will consider the future of head and neck services at Ipswich Hospital, it was decided today.

After hearing passionate arguments regarding the planed move of head and neck cancer surgery from Ipswich to Norwich, Suffolk County Council's health scrutiny committee asked for the report, looking at all the evidence surrounding the decision, to be prepared by surgeons before its next meeting.

After the Anglia Cancer Network today said it wanted the surgery moved to Norwich, Suffolk Primary Care Trust (PCT) will now make a final decision on the surgery's future at its board meeting on July 30.

However that decision could be referred to the health secretary by the scrutiny committee if it feels it is not in the best interests of Suffolk's healthcare.
