The collision happened in Bromley Road, Elmstead Market when the cyclist and a white Ford Transit struck each other on Harwich Road shortly after 5:30pm yesterday.

The 62-year-old van driver from Colchester was uninjured.

An Essex Police spokesman said: “We're appealing for witnesses to the collision and especially the driver of a small red car which stopped at the scene to offer assistance, but then left prior to our arrival.”

A section of the road was closed for about four hours as forensic investigators carried out enquiries.

Anyone with information in connection with this crash, especially the red car driver, has been urged to contact Stanway road policing unit on 01206 762512.
