Youngsters could be hit with a major blow to a campaign to build a skatepark in their village after a bid came in to buy the existing ramps.

Debenham Parish Council will meet tonight to discuss the project for a permanent skatepark in the village.

The organisers behind the park have struggled to find a location for it, with failed attempts to base it at the leisure centre and the recreation ground.

Now a bid of £4,000 for the ramps, currently stored by the council at its own expense, has been lodged. Parish chairman Richard Blackwell said the offer, which is from another parish council, was of interest.

He said: “It’s not a financial decision. This will go on and on if we are not careful.

“We spent £4,000 on good quality second-hand ramps; new ones would have cost £80,000.”

Councillors decided to give the project more time last month to come up with a permanent site. The chairman of Project D, the group behind the skatepark plan, is Jane Baldwin. She said selling the ramps would be the “sensible thing to do” if no permanent site can be found. “There are a couple of options that we want to check out as a last resort,” she said. “There’s not a lot of progress at the moment. It is not necessarily the end of the project. “We are trying to think outside the box and explore options. Plan B is to look at a mobile skatepark. It’s a more affordable option but not without its drawbacks.” Last year a land appeal was launched to find a suitable location for the skatepark. Mrs Baldwin said in October that there had been little progress with the appeal.

The council put aside £600 to store the equipment for the second half of 2013/14.

It will meet tonight for a full council meeting at Dove Cottage at 7.30pm.
