MOTORISTS in north Essex faced long delays this lunchtime after a car fire on the A12 brought traffic to a standstill.
The incident began on the northbound side of the busy dual carriageway at just before midday at junction 29 near Ardleigh, Colchester.
Drivers were left facing lengthy queues after the road was closed while the fire was put out and the scene was cleared up and traffic on the opposite side of the road was also delayed.
A spokesman for Essex Police said: “As a result of the smoke and heat intensity, road policing officers closed both carriageways while waiting for firefighters to arrive and extinguish the flames.”
The incident involved a blue Renault Laguna and nobody was injured. The road has now reopened and traffic is returning to normal.
