Essex Police have warned people travelling southbound on the A12 to avoid the area near Boreham Interchange.
A collision involving two lorries which happened earlier requires specialist equipment to clear the road.
One lane is now open but delays are expected for at least two hours.
Thousands of towels being carried by one of the lorries were scattered across the carriageways.
