A Suffolk woman has been convicted of driving with cocaine and cannabis in her system.

Poppy Paul failed to appear at South East Suffolk Magistrates’ Court in Ipswich where she was found guilty after the case was proved by prosecutors in her absence on Monday.

The 29-year-old, from Brundish, near Framlingham, was pulled over in a red Range Rover Evoque – based on intelligence that the driver was under the influence – in a lay-by of the A14 just west of Risby.

The court heard how Paul was stopped by a roads police officer at about 4.40pm on October 20 last year.

Prosecutor Tess Mann said: “Paul told the officer she had been around someone who used cannabis.

“A drug wipe test proved positive for cocaine.

“Paul was arrested and gave no reply when cautioned.”

Tests returned positive readings for the cocaine derivative benzoylecgonine and the primary psychoactive ingredient of cannabis, delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) – both of which can remain in the system for days after consumption.

Tests showed that Paul was driving with 400 microgrammes of benzoylecgonine per litre of blood – the legal limit being 50mcg – and with 5.8mcg of Delta-9-THC per litre of blood – the legal limit being two.

The court heard how Paul had no previous criminal convictions to her name.

It was the second occasion she had failed to appear for the hearing, which had been adjourned from its first listing on February 19.

Magistrates decided the case could be proved in the absence of the defendant.

The bench further adjourned the case for sentencing by magistrates at the same court on the afternoon of Tuesday, April 3.

Paul will be required to attend the sentencing.

Drug-driving carries the penalty of minimum one-year driving ban and a fine of up to £5,000.
