A milkman has been recognised for 40 years of service for his second job as a fireman.
Station Officer Martin Cable joined Essex County Fire and Rescue Service (ECFRS) in 1975 aged just 18, and for the same four decades he has been a full-time milkman. Based in Maldon, his most memorable incident includes a fire at Chelmsford Prison in 1978, where there were six inmates inside and the firefighter’s uniform was almost identical to that of the inmates, leading to a “nerve-wracking” time.
The father of two and grandfather of four plans to continue working.
