A Colchester man who picked up a kitchen knife and threatened to kill his mother during a row has been given a suspended prison sentence.
Edwin Morgan became upset when his mother Deborah Morgan rented out his room and picked up a knife from the kitchen and threatened to stab her, Ipswich Crown Court heard.
In a statement to police about the incident on April 22 Ms Morgan accepted she owed her son £10,000, which included £6,500 compensation he had been awarded for an injury at school and £3,500 he had lent her.
She told police she couldn’t afford to repay the money and because of this her son had become increasingly abusive and aggressive towards her.
She said that on the day in question her son had been upset about her renting out a room in which he used to spend time with his girlfriend.
During the conversation he had become aggressive and picked up a kitchen knife and threatened to kill her.
She said he had also demanded the money she owed him and had tried to take a diamond ring off her finger.
“I was scared he would stab me or slash my face,” said Ms Morgan.
She said that her son had also kicked the sofa and threatened to break her foot.
Morgan, 21, formerly of Nicholson’s Grove, Colchester, admitted making a threat to kill and assault by beating.
He was given an 18 month prison sentence suspended for two years and a 10 day rehabilitation activity requirement.
He was also ordered to do 120 hours unpaid work in the community and banned from going to his mother’s home in Nicholson’s Grove, Colchester, indefinitely.
He was also ordered to pay £400 costs and a £140 victim surcharge.
Evelyn Hicks, representing Morgan, said her client’s mother had mental health difficulties and he had supported her by getting a job and giving her money.
She said he had become frustrated because his mother had rented out his room because she needed money.
However he accepted he had caused her the “utmost fear” by picking up the knife and threatening to kill her.
He was now living with his grandparents and attending college.
