A gang of thieves used a digger to rip a cash machine from an Essex bank in the early hours of this morning.

The suspects took cash from the Halifax cash machine in King Street, Saffron Walden, at around 1.45am.

“We believe up to five suspects used a JCB digger to pull the machine free before it was loaded into a white van,” an Essex Police spokesman said.

“We have also received reports that two other vehicles, a silver and white car, were with the van as it left the scene.”

“We searched the area with assistance from the police helicopter but were unable to find the vehicles described.”

Witnesses or anyone who has CCTV or dash cam footage are asked to contact Braintree CID on 101 quoting incident 82 of 13/09.

People can report information online at Essex Police or by calling Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 1111.
