BRITAIN’S biggest port was open again for business today after more than 12 hours of snow clearance work.

The Port of Felixstowe was closed yesterday after the heavy snowfall made it impossible to see the tracks and ground lines of the quayside areas and container storage parks.

Lorry drivers were told to delay their journeys as work to clear the four-inch snow blanket got under way. The port re-opened at 11pm.

“Everyone at the port has worked very hard to clear the snow to enable the port to resume normal operations,” said a spokesman.

It was a slow and careful drive to work for people in Felixstowe today.

There was no fresh snowfall overnight and while the resort’s main routes were clear, sideroads remain treacherous.
