Youngsters from two schools learned about the traditional spirit of harvest when they brought their gifts for those in need.

Some 180 pupils from Fairfield Infant and 360 from Colneis Junior at Felixstowe took part in services held at Trinity Methodist Church, Hamilton Road.

Three services were held to allow all the children to attend.

The children were invited to bring in items to support The Basic Life Charity for its ‘DIP’ project – Donations Into Parcels – which enables those in need who live in the Felixstowe, Walton and Trimley areas to receive free food parcels.

The schools’ new executive headteacher Mark Girling said: “Above anything else, I believe that schools should be at the heart of the communities that we serve.

Our local area and the people within it have huge potential and it is a central part of a schools role to be able to provide the opportunities to allow young people to develop aspirations for the future. I am very much looking forward to working with you all.

“A great example of how schools can link with the community at this time of year is the work we do around harvest. Our visit to Trinity Methodist Church to celebrate harvest has always been a key part of our calendar allowing the children an opportunity not only to visit areas of their local town but to begin to gain an understanding of wider celebrations and events.”

Mr Girling, who took over as head at the Federation of Fairfield Infant and Colneis Junior schools in September, said he had received a warm welcome from the local community.

He was born in Suffolk, went to school in Ipswich, and began his teaching career more than 20 years ago at Trimley St Mary Primary and has worked in a range of schools across the county since then.
