Contractors have started work to repair several sections of Felixstowe’s promenade damaged by last month’s North Sea surge.

The work is expected to take seven weeks to complete.

Suffolk Coastal District Council said a site compound for the workers had been set up south of Orford Road and the initial work had involved the clearance of debris from the prom in two areas near St Edmunds Road.

Other works would also be taking place, including the repair and replacement of coping stones smashed by the huge storm-driven waves along the seaward edge of the prom from Orford Road to Undercliff Road East. Additional prom repairs are also to be carried out by Suffolk County Council in south Felixstowe to deal with other extensive damage.

A spokesman said: “We are liaising with Suffolk County Council to co-ordinate our works and achieve completion as quickly as possible.”
