FIREFIGHTERS have tackled a large fire at a stable block in Newmarket this evening.

FIREFIGHTERS have tackled a large fire at a stable block in Newmarket this evening.

Fire broke out at Hamilton Stables, on Hamilton Road, shortly before 7.32pm, when fire control received a call alerting them to the incident.

Two crews from Newmarket fire station were dispatched to the scene and due to the number of calls received about the incident a further crew from Cambridgeshire were also sent to help.

Upon arrival firefighters discovered a range of wooden stable block buildings, measuring approximately 80 metres by 15 metres, totally alight.

Two further fire crews from Cambridgeshire assisted and firefighters used seven hose reels, two jets and a water relay to extinguish the blaze.

No horses, other livestock or people were thought to have been injured during the fire.

A spokesperson for the Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service said: “Approximately 90% of the building was destroyed by fire.

“No livestock was involved in the incident.”

The incident was brought under control and the flames were extinguished by 8.28pm. Crews are currently at the scene damping down the area.
