The fire broke out in the ground floor flat of a two-storey terrace building in Black Horse Lane in the town centre at just after 7.15pm on Saturday.
Tree fire crews were called to the fire which was under control just before 7.40pm. No one was hurt.
Then at about 8.50pm firefighters from Ipswich were also called to Holcombe Crescent, Chantry, to deal with a skip fire which was believed to have been started deliberately.
