Two fire engines were sent to the fire in a ground floor bedsit of a three-storey building on the corner of Mersea Road and Fairfax Road, Colchester, at 7.30pm.
Initial calls to the blaze suggested people were trapped in the bedsit, but on arrival fire crews found everyone safe.
Firefighters used breathing apparatus and a hose reel to bring the fire under control.
The cause of the fire is thought to be suspicious and police have been notified. A fire investigation will be carried out.
