MORE than 20 firefighters have tackled a cottage fire at a Suffolk village.

The incident broke out at 12.45pm in Gipping Road, Stowupland near Stowmarket, and saw crews called to the scene from Stowmarket, Needham Market, Elmswell, Debenham and a forward control vehicle from Bury St Edmunds.

Firefighters said the blaze, which caused severe damage inside the roof and moderate damage to three bedrooms, started accidentally after welding work was being undertaken at the property.

Martyn Thorpe, a fire group manager from Ipswich, said: “There was severe damage to the roof and three bedrooms below were damaged, but this could have been a lot worse.”

The incident was brought under control with 20 minutes and no-one was hurt.

The residents of the home, who are understood to have had work carried out at their home recently, declined to comment.
