Five fire crews from south Suffolk were called to put out a blaze in a field in Elmsett near Ipswich on Saturday afternoon.

Two crews from Ipswich, one from Princes Street and one from the Ipswich East fire station at Ransomes, were joined by firefighters from Hadleigh, Bury St Edmunds and Long Melford.

They were called to a fire in standing crops in a field at Offton Road, in Elmsett, shortly before 4pm and after the first three crews arrived they asked for another two teams to come to support them.

The fire was brought under control within an hour and the crews were able to return to their bases.

A crew from Bury St Edmunds fire station also dealt with a small blaze at an address in Oakes Road in the town – that was handled by a single team of firefighters who brought the incident under control within 30 minutes of the initial call being logged by the fire control officers.
