POLICE last night named a pensioner who died in a fire in her Suffolk flat.

Irene Ann Conway-McGovern, 66, was found dead in the ground floor flat at Woodlands Park in Brandon Road, Mildenhall, on November 12.

A police spokesman said an inquest was opened and adjourned at 4pm yesterday at the coroner's office in Bury St Edmunds and a full hearing would be held at a later date.

Ms Conway-McGovern was thought to have lived alone in the flat. Brave neighbours tried to rescue the pensioner when the fire was spotted at just after 3am on November 12 but they were forced back by thick smoke.

Firefighters, who were on the scene within minutes of the alarm being raised, managed to get the victim out of the Victorian building but nothing could be done to save her.
