Despite spells of sunshine in areas around Ipswich, forecasters are expecting snow flurries to continue through the day - at times turning heavy. Latest updates here.

The Met Office has extended its yellow weather warning for snow until 11.55pm tonight, warning that some rural communities in East Anglia may get cut off.

A forecaster said: “Heavy snow showers are expected during today.

“There is the potential for travel delays on roads, with some stranded vehicles and passengers, as well as delays or cancellations to rail and air travel.

“Some rural communities could become cut off.

“Power cuts may also occur and other services, such as mobile phones, may be affected.”

According to Adam Dury, forecaster at Weatherquest, despite a spell of sunshine just before lunch time, more snow is expected to keep falling in spells throughout the day.

“There is a line of snow clouds just offshore which may bring a few heavy bursts at some point this afternoon,” he said.

“We have had a bit of sunshine but it is going to be one of those days where it will come back and still be pretty snowy.

“Temperatures will remain low today which limit the amount the snow will melt.

“We will see continuous patchy flurries all across the region.

“It should be lighter in the west but turning heavier in the east, but will become less frequent this afternoon.

“There won’t be as much snow melt today due to the clouds and there will be a strong easterly wind which will increase the wind chill.”

He added maximum temperatures today would be around -1C (30F) although it could go as low as -5C (23F).

“With that cloud and snow cover temperatures are not going to warm up.

“The whole region is not going to reach above freezing.”

Tomorrow, gusts of 40-50mph will blast the region towards midday, especially in coastal areas, which could cause snow to blow around and form drifts.

“There will be a lot of windchill,” said Mr Dury.

“Temperatures will be down to -7 to -8 so we are expecting a very cold morning tomorrow.

“With that cold and only hazy sunshine it will inhibit snow melt.”
