ALMOST 100 people turned out in force to hear more about proposals to shape the future of their community.

A meeting was held in Framlingham recently to discuss how to progress a Neighbourhood Plan.

It was attended by 94 people who learnt more about what was involved and how they could take part.

Among the issues that residents felt should be addressed in the plan were concerns about a lack of parking and the need for more low cost homes for local people.

A number of volunteers also came forward to help progress the project and four working groups were set up to look at housing, retail and employment, infrastructure and community.

Members will now have an initial meeting in the new year before splitting up into their various groups to investigate possible options and gather evidence.

The meeting was organised by Framlingham Town Council but clerk Eileen Coe explained it is very much a community led plan.

“We were delighted with the turn out,” she said. “We delivered 4,400 leaflets in the community newsletter because we wanted to make sure as many people as possible attended.

“There were lots of questions and a number of people came forward. Each working group has a minimum of four members, including a lead person.

“The important thing is that it’s not too late to take part. Anyone who would like to join one of the working groups can contact me.

“This isn’t the town council’s plan. It’s very much a plan by the community for the community - we need people to take part if we are going to take it forward and we want to hear from as many people as possible. The chance to get involved is now.”

A number of places in Suffolk are looking at the possibility of implementing a Neighbourhood Plan, which has been made possible because of new planning powers handed to town and parish councils by the Government.

The aim is to allow local people to have more of an influence over what happens in their communities over the next 15 or so years.

The document can cover everything from housing, employment, retail and transport through to parking, town centre improvements, education, recreation and health.

Future planning applications will be judged against the plan and it will therefore influence whether they are approved or refused.
