PLANS for an event in memory of tragic mother Mary Griffiths have been announced to raise funds for her three daughters.

Friends of tragic fitness instructor Mrs Griffiths, who died following an incident at her Suffolk home earlier this month , have organised a special event at Bury St Edmunds Leisure Centre on July 4.

Fitness classes will be held in the main hall with all money raised going to the trust fund, “Friends of Mary”, which was set up to pay for whatever support her daughters - Jess, Hannah and Sophie - need in the coming years.

Mrs Griffiths, 38, was found fighting for life at her house in Bullrush Crescent, Bury St Edmunds, during the early hours of May 6.

Ms Griffiths, who worked as a fitness instructor in Newmarket, Bury and Stowmarket, died later that morning at West Suffolk Hospital in Bury of a deep chest wound.

It is understood her three children - one of whom is at St Benedict's College, the other two at St Louis Middle School in Bury - were present in the house at the time of the incident.

A service was held for Mrs Griffiths at St Edmunds Church, Bury, on Thursday - at the same time as a second memorial in her native Ireland.

Karen Bergdahl , a close friend of Ms Griffiths, said: “The church was absolutely packed for a very moving and sad service.

“It was really nice to have all her friends, from all different aspects of her life, together to pay tribute to Mary. A very close friend of hers gave an excellent speech and really summed up what Mary meant to all of us.”

The family of Ms Griffiths remain too upset to speak about her death but her sister-in-law Ann Ryan has publicly thanked friends for their “thoughts and prayers” and said it had meant a great deal to them at “this very tragic time”.

An inquest into her death has been opened and adjourned by the Greater Suffolk Coroner.

A 40-year-old man was arrested by police in Bockhill Road, Bury, on suspicion of murder but has since been released into the care of Suffolk Mental Health Partnership Trust after he was deemed unfit to be questioned.

The fitness event - including body combat and body attack classes - will run from 1.30pm to 4pm on July 4. Entrance fee is 5 with all proceeds going to the trust fund.

Friends of Mary is managed by HSBC. The sort code for the fund is 401521 and the account number is 71712888.
