A group of adults with learning disabilities have transformed former waste ground on a Sudbury industrial estate into a haven for wildlife.

Now the group hopes other businesses based in the area will follow their lead and create more wildlife friendly spaces. To this end, they are offering to help with labour and expertise.

Created by The Green Group from Leading Lives Community Hub, the garden includes wild plants and vegetables and has already become a haven for wildlife. The team has been working with the support of local conservationist George Millins who has spent time with them sharing his knowledge, inspiration and commitment to wildlife.

They learnt how to encourage lizards by making ‘sunbeds’ and have set a wide selection of wild plants to entice butterflies to the site.

Organic vegetables grown from seed have produced a bumper harvest which is already being put to good use in the Leading Lives kitchens.

A motion activated camera has been set up to record visitors to the garden and so far many species of wild birds and foxes have been spotted with the images being relayed to the Leading Lives facebook page.

Sally Rodwell, Leading Lives locality manager in Sudbury, said: “We were conscious that we had a piece of land that could be put to far better use and where we could develop our environmental expertise.”

The Green Group plans to complete a bog garden in the grounds which will form a very important habitat for amphibians.
