Volunteers are needed to help create a 100m-long hedgerow that will enable endangered dormice to thrive.

The project to produce a ‘dormouse corridor’ at Tiger Hill in Assington near Sudbury is being managed by a group from the Dedham Vale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, along with volunteers from the Stour Valley Project and Suffolk Wildlife Trust.

When 14-year-old Archie Dixon-Smith was told his mother had breast cancer he was compelled “to do something” so the teenager from Groton, near Sudbury, set about planning a fundraising walk for charity with his friends. Archie accompanied by his family and friends, walked 10 miles from Ringshall to Darmsden and back again – and so far he has raised more than £8,000.

Mother-of-four Cherie Pointon discovered a bottle washed up on the shoreline of Pakefield Beach during an early morning walk with the family dog Rolo. She took the bottle home to open with her children Tom, 15, Joel, 13, Rosie, 11, and Daniel, nine. The message inside was from an eight-year-old boy called Maarten, who lives in Lowestoft’s former twin town of Katwijk. and it also contained a picture of Maarten with a seal and a tourist information sheet about Katwijk.

A new shuttle service that aims to offset the impact of a bus ban in Southwold has moved a step closer as Suffolk County Council donated a redundant minibus to the town council. A controversial ban on buses using parts of the High Street was made permanent in November in a bid to ease congestion.

Style-savvy students have taken to the catwalk to raise almost £4,000 for a good cause. Youngsters from Woodbridge School cut a dash at their charity fashion show. The evening featured clothes from a number of local retailers, including the designs of sixth form student Hannah Gilbert.

Green-fingered volunteers had their spades at the ready for some early season planting. Around 20 people, including a number of children, were at the community garden in Pig’s Meadow, Framlingham. They were helping to create a woodland edge by planting shrubs and trees.

Mystery surrounds the death of a young porpoise found washed ashore at Old Felixstowe. The 4ft-long creature was found on the shore at The Dip – and was reportedly seen alive in the water shortly beforehand.

Pupils at an Ipswich independent school have found an unusual way of recycling their old plastic bottles. Members of the gardening club at Orwell Park School are constructing their very own greenhouse – made entirely from soft drink bottles, all fitted to a wooden frame.

A village project that started as a bit of fun and an excuse for people to have a natter over a cup of tea has well and truly caught people’s imagination. Orford General Stores’ community scarf is now around 9ft long and will eventually be auctioned off to raise funds for the sports pavilion.
