HUNDREDS of people took part in the comeback of a popular cycling event in Tendring.

More than 700 riders took to the saddle for the Tour de Tendring which has been an annual event on the district's calendar but was missing last year.

Cyclists could chose from a 20 or 50 mile ride and had fine dry weather on the picturesque routes on Saturday.

Tour de Tendring was organised by Tendring District Council working with Essex County Council and NHS North East Essex.

Carlo Guglielmi, Tendring District Council's cabinet member for community partnerships and renewal, said: “It was a fantastic day and we were very lucky with the weather which was the icing on the cake.

“They had forecast a few showers but luckily we didn't have a drop of rain all day.

“People literally turned out in their hundreds and really enjoyed themselves and it was all part of the council's ongoing commitment to provide popular fun and active events for all ages.”

Entertainment was provided all day at the start and finish point at Dovercourt Swimming Pool, with face painting, African drumming, skateboarding and the artbus from Colchester gallery Firstsite.

Lee Pugh, Tendring District Council's theatre and entertainments manager, said: “We had a large number of riders register on the day once they realised the weather was going to be okay and the comments we got back were so positive and encouraging.”
