Visitors to a Suffolk monument were swept back in time at the weekend as it staged a living history event.

The 95th Rifles military re-enactment group set up camp at Landguard Fort at Felixstowe for a weekend of soldiering, musketry and drill.

The group put on static displays in the upper gallery rooms around the courtyard, and created a fire-pit for cooking in the outer perimeter.

As well as a series of displays of drill and firing, the soldiers – led by Alan Earp – chatted to families about life in the British infantry in the early 1800s.

The Rifles served throughout the Peninsular War in Spain, in America during the war of 1812, and oversaw the downfall of Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815.

Also during the weekend the Riotous Assembly attended to sing songs from the era.

Fort operations manager Shirley Fernley said it was the 95th Rifles’ last visit of the season and it had been an excellent weekend, despite some heavy rain at times.

She said: “They are a wonderful group and they create a magical atmosphere and it has been a fabulous weekend.”
