A bright summers day attracted village residents and many visitors to this year’s Orford, Sudbourne and Gedgrave Flower Show and Fete.

Traditional displays of the best efforts of local growers of vegetables, fruit and flowers formed the centre piece of this popular event.

Other talents on display included handicrafts, art, photography and baking amongst the 175 classes of exhibits.

Best in Show Prize, the de Wynter Rose Bowl was won by John Brown from Framlingham for his superb dahlia.

But it was the Orford pairing of Philip and Patricia Tricker who again won much silverware with seven major trophies including the Silver Challenge Cup for Philip for the Best Male Exhibitor with most points in the show and Pat taking the Norton Challenge Cup, the ladies’ equivalent.

Orford fisherman, Neil Macro, won the Macro Cup for the heaviest pumpkin weighing in at 245lbs – believed to be a local record.

Attractions at this traditional village event included children’s races, children’s fancy dress parade, a miniature steam railway, Punch and Judy, donkey rides, angora goats on display and the popular Cobwebs Zoomer plastic balls propelled by “young” people inside in the manner of a hamster wheel.

Following presentation of the prizes by Diana Paterson, the Orford Dog Races brought the proceedings to a close.

“Flash” was the outright winner catching the large butchers bone on the finishing line.

Committee chairman John Poulter said: “I am delighted to report another successful flower show, an event that brings together the villages and attracts so many friends from further afield whilst providing a ‘platform’ for the fundraising of local organisations and charities.”
