Greater Anglia passengers faced major disruption in Suffolk and north Essex today due to overhead wire problems at Diss station and a broken down freight train.
Damage caused to the wires by Storm Eleanor delayed and cancelled trains between Stowmarket and Diss for most of the day.
Network Rail engineers managed to repair the fault quickly but passengers experienced delays of up to 20 minutes on the line towards Norwich.
Commuters were further delayed into rush hour as a freight train broke down between Chelmsford and Ingatestone.
Services running through both stations were cancelled, delayed by up to 30 minutes or revised.
The delays came as new ticket prices – with an average increase of 3.4% – were introduced earlier this week.
Both Greater Anglia and Network Rail apologised for the disruption.
Greater Anglia’s social media team tweeted a picture of the damage to overhead wires explaining to customers why trains were delayed.
Alterations to specific trains can be found using the rail operator’s JourneyCheck tool.
