POLICE in Witham are warning owners of small pets to be extra vigilant this evening after a large owl escaped from its home.
The Turkmenian Eagle Owl, which is speckled brown and has a wingspan of 5ft, went missing from its aviary at the rear of the owner's home in Brent Close.
The owner discovered the loss at shortly after 7am yesterday.
Although the owl is not thought to be a danger to the public, it should not be approached if sighted, as it is not used to being handled.
It normally gets fed every day, so will probably be hungry by now.
Police are warning pet owners to be aware the bird is loose, and asking anyone who sees it to report it to the service desk at Braintree police station on 01376 551312.
