Education secretary Michael Gove has chosen Ipswich MP Ben Gummer as his parliamentary aide.

In the final stage of the government reshuffle, the town’s MP - who was elected to the House of Commons in 2010 - has been made Mr Gove’s parliamentary private secretary.

The role will see him track backbench opinion in the House of Commons on behalf of the cabinet minister.

Mr Gummer replaces Croydon Central MP Gavin Barwell, who was promoted to the job of assistant whip last week.

He joins West Suffolk MP Matthew Hancock and South-West Norfolk MP Elizabeth Truss who are already ministers in the Department for Education.

Essex MP Priti Patel has also been promoted to the Conservative policy board.
