A drunken docker is banned from the road today after being caught drink-driving while more than twice the legal limit.

Peter Baines admitted driving while above the alcohol limit when he appeared before South East Suffolk Magistrates Court in Ipswich.

The 59-year-old was arrested on December 1 when he arrived at his home in Chatsworth Crescent, Trimley St Mary.

During the afternoon a police community support officer was alerted by a member of the public to a man seen getting into an Audi A4 in Cobbold Road, Felixstowe.

The officer was told the person seemed to have been staggering.

Details of the car were given to police officers who went to Baines’ home. When his vehicle pulled up he was spoken to and breathalysed.

A subsequent breath test showed he had 71 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 35mcgs.

Baines was disqualified from driving for 18 months and fined 400. He was also ordered to pay a 40 government surcharge and 85 costs.

Another man arrested on suspicion of being over the limit has pleaded guilty to drink-driving but has asked for a special hearing before sentencing as he claims his brother spiked his drink.

Samuel Beckett, of Lackford Place, Ravenswood, Ipswich, said he believed he had only consumed one pint of lager when he his VW Polo was stopped on December 1 in Ravenswood Way.

However, the court heard he had 73 mgs of alcohol in 100 mls of breath.

Beckett said his brother has since come forward to say he added vodka to the orange juice the 21-year-old was drinking.

It is likely Beckett’s brother will be called to give evidence before Ipswich magistrates at a further hearing of the case on February 15.

Felicity Bloomfield, of Millers Court, Barham, near Ipswich, was the third motorist to admit drink-driving when she appeared before the court.

The 23-year-old was seen by police driving the wrong way up Queen Street in Ipswich, at 12.45am on November 25.

Bloomfield was breath tested and arrested after parking her Ford Fiesta in a parking bay.

She was found to have had 89 mcgs of alcohol in 100 mls of breath.

Bloomfield told the court she knew how “silly” she had been.

She was disqualified from driving for 20 months, fined 110, and ordered to pay 85 costs as well as a 20 victim surcharge.
