AN arson investigation was launched today after a fire in three bins spread to an Ipswich shed and engulfed nearby flats in smoke.
The flats in Highfield Road had to be evacuated after the fire took hold in the bins and shed at about 12.15am.
The bins were located outside the flats and the flames quickly caught the shed and set it alight.
Firefighters from the Colchester Road fire station were called and they evacuated the flats due to what Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service described as “excessive smoke”.
The fire was brought under control by 12.55am.
The fire service said the cause of the blaze is being treated as suspicious.
