A town centre road which was flooded after a water main burst will remain closed until Monday at the earliest.

Although Anglian Water repaired the burst pipe on Elm Street by early evening yesterday, the significant damage to the road caused by the leak will take a lot longer to fix.

More than 60 properties lost running water for three hours yesterday afternoon, including the Black Horse pub, but supplies were restored by around 7pm.

However once all the damage to Elm Street was assessed, it became clear that things were much worse than first thought.

Anglian Water will now work through the weekend to ensure the road is fixed as soon as possible, having originally thought all work would be completed by tomorrow.

A spokeswoman for the water company said: “We will try to complete the work as soon as possible and will have a full team working through the weekend to ensure that.

“A much larger area has been affected than we first thought.”
