POLICE have confirmed that a 21-year-old who reported a rape was not the victim of any crime.

The woman told police she had been raped between 2.45am and 3.15am close to Ipswich's Tower Ramparts shopping centre last Thursday.

Suffolk police said a number of key witnesses responded to the media appeals and were able to provide valuable information, which supported CCTV and other lines of enquiry to conclude that no criminal activity had taken place.

Detective Chief Inspector Mark Jepson - who led this investigation, said, “Rape allegations involve complex enquiries. We have a duty to investigate allegations of crimes and had to be 100% sure that no offences had occurred. On this occasion the female wasn't sure if an offence had occurred but is now very reassured that she was not subjected to an attack.”

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank the public and the media for their assistance in this enquiry.”
