Drivers heading to Ipswich town centre faced gridlock on Thursday morning after one lane of the always-busy Star Lane gyratory system was closed after one of the traffic lights at the bottom of Lower Brook Street was damaged in an accident.
Bollards were put out to close the lane very early – but it was only after 9am that a team of engineers from Suffolk Highway’s contractors Kier turned up to carry out any work.
By then drivers from all over the town were suffering in long queues – journeys from the Wherstead Road ski slope to the town centre were taking 45 minutes rather than the usual 10 minutes.
Other routes into the town were also suffering as drivers tried to find other ways around the blockage.
