A damaged sewer in Ipswich has led to traffic disruption.

The sewer and road surface of Tuddenham Road between Cemetery Road and Tuddenham Avenue were damaged last week as a result of heavy rainfall, however Anglia Water decided to postpone repairs in order to minimise traffic disruption during the Suffolk Show.

Emma Staples, from Anglian Water, said: “We’re sorry for any disruption caused to people near Tuddenham Road today while we carry out repairs to the sewer and road surface. The large volumes of water flowing through the sewer after last week’s very heavy rain caused pressure to build up in the system and, unfortunately, this damaged a manhole and the road surface.

“We spoke to the Highways Agency at the time but agreed not to close the road until after the Suffolk Show to keep disruption to a minimum. Instead we’ve started the repair today and a signed diversion is in place while we complete this.

“We are very sorry for any inconvenience to those nearby. We are working hard to return things to normal as quickly as possible and hope to have the road re-opened by the middle of the week.”

Bus services along Tuddenham Road have been diverted due to the sewer collapse between Cemetery Lane and Tuddenham Avenue.

Beestons’ service 39 (and applicable journeys on 30 and 30A) will operate normal routing to Tuddenham Road, then operate via Gainsborough Road, Westerfield Road, Valley Road and then Kingsgate Drive, Brunswick Road, Queensgate Drive looping back to Valley Road (both directions). All other parts of this route operate as normal.

All journeys on service 30 will operate via Westerfield Road before returning to the normal routing.
