The jury in the trial of a diabetic Suffolk man accused of attacking his wife and threatening to kill her after she woke him up to check he’d injected himself with insulin is expected to retire to consider its verdicts tomorrow.

Before Ipswich Crown Court is Andrew Tovell, 52, of Mill Lane, Barnby, Beccles who has denied making a threat to kill Samantha Tovell, causing her grievous bodily harm with intent and assaulting her by beating in 2016.

The court has heard Mrs Tovell was worried when she heard her diabetic husband lying in bed making a gurgling sound that she’d heard before when he’d been seriously ill.

When she woke him up he allegedly lost his temper and punched her twice before grabbing her throat and dragging her towards the stairs.

He had then allegedly hit her with a box and banged her head on an ornament before threatening to kill her.

When she tried to run away he allegedly made her sit on a chair and had then stabbed the material of the chair either side of her head with a knife.

Mrs Tovell was later found to have a fractured eye socket.
