Police have declined to comment on reports that a man whose body was discovered in Leiston had suffered neck wounds.

East Anglian Daily Times:

Suffolk Constabulary said it would not comment at this stage on reports that neck wounds were found on the body, discovered at an address in the town yesterday morning.

Investigations into the ‘unexplained’ death of an elderly man led police to a field in Leiston earlier today.

The search of a field off Carr Avenue was in relation to the discovery of a man’s body at an address in Grimsey Road yesterday morning.

It is also believed that at least one other location was subject to a police search in the town and that the matter is now in the hands of the Norfolk and Suffolk joint major investigation team.

The man was described by police as “elderly” and is thought to have been the only occupant of the property.

Formal identification is still to take place on the body but police said the death was being treated as “unexplained”. They said the man’s next-of-kin had been informed and that a post-mortem examination was due to take place today.

Officers were called to the scene at around 9.15am to reports that a body had been discovered inside.

Police said this morning’s search is related to yesterday’s discovery but would not disclose what officers are looking for.

The cordon has since been lifted and police have left the scene.

A resident of Carr Avenue, who wished to remain nameless, said: “I noticed the cordon at about 8am but don’t know exactly when it was put up.

“One officer was there for some time. At about 11am, a couple of vans, a police car and an unmarked car arrived. About 14 officers were going through the field checking for something. A couple were going round the perimeter. It was concentrated on an area of scrub on an otherwise quite open field.

“I don’t often see people there but some walk their dogs around it.”
